UK Write-Off Categories Explained
Every salvage check we run reports the exact ABI category recorded against the vehicle — here is what each one actually means for you as a buyer.
Cat A
Scrap only. The vehicle and every part of it must be crushed — it should never legally return to the road.
Cat B
Body shell destroyed. Salvageable parts may be reused, but the shell itself is banned from the road forever.
Cat S
Structural damage repaired. The chassis or safety structure was compromised — value and safety depend entirely on repair quality.
Cat N
Non-structural damage. Often sold as 'light damage', but can hide electrical, airbag and flood-related faults.
