They dried out the seats. But the flood water is still rotting the wiring harness underneath.

Following heavy UK storms and flash floods, thousands of water-logged cars are polished up and dumped on the used market. Within six months, the corrosion hits the ECU, the airbags fail, and your car becomes a total write-off. Don't buy a rolling electrical ghost.

The Forecourt Secret Dealers Hide

A shiny valet hides a lot. It doesn't hide corrosion for long.

Why the Carpet Line Kills the Car

Once water reaches the carpet, it's sitting on the wiring looms, connectors and control modules that run along the floor. Insurers know the repair bill for chasing corrosion through a modern car can dwarf its value — so many are written off the moment water crosses that line.

How Dodgy Sellers Clean Them Up

Seats out, carpets shampooed, a new air freshener and a full valet. Some are bought cheap, dried and resold before anything fails. Not every flood car is recorded as a write-off — a privately claimed or uninsured flood can leave no database marker at all.

Six Months Later

Corrosion doesn't stop when the car dries. It creeps along copper, into plugs and ECUs. Intermittent warning lights, dead central locking and airbag faults are classic signs — and by then the seller is long gone.

Free Trade Checklist

  • Damp or musty smell — especially with the heater on full and the windows shut.
  • Silt, grit or tide marks under carpets, in the spare-wheel well and boot corners.
  • Rust on seat rails, seat bolts and under-dash brackets that should be clean.
  • Fogged-up or water-marked instrument cluster and headlight lenses.
  • New carpets or seats in an otherwise tired car. Ask why.
  • Flickering warning lights, erratic electrics or a battery that keeps going flat.

A clean database result cannot rule out an unrecorded flood. If two or more of these show up, walk away or get expert eyes on it.
