Buying a Car Tied to Corporate Debt? Don’t Trust a Verbal Promise on Liquidated Assets.

Rogue sellers and liquidating companies routinely unload cars carrying secret finance agreements and frozen debt. If the lender still owns the car, it can pursue it — leaving you out of pocket and in a dispute. Run an instant hidden finance check before you hand over a single penny.

Three Traps Behind a Debt-Tied Car

“It's almost settled” is a story. You need evidence.

The “Company Liquidation” Ghost Debt Trap

When a business is failing, fleet and company cars can be sold off fast — sometimes while a lender or creditor still has a claim over them. A seller with company paperwork is not proof the company had the right to sell. Ask who legally owns the car, check for recorded finance and be wary of rushed cash sales from a firm in trouble.

The “Hidden HP / PCP” Agreement Blind Spot

On hire purchase and conditional sale agreements, the lender usually owns the car until the final payment is made. Not every agreement or charge shows up in every check, and lenders keep records long after a private sale. A basic look at the paperwork is not enough — check the finance records and question anything that doesn't match.

The “Legal Repossession” Risk

If finance is still owed, the lender can pursue the car. Private buyers acting in good faith may be protected for hire purchase and conditional sale cars, but that protection does not cover every situation (such as logbook loans or trade buyers), and proving it can mean a long, stressful dispute. Clear the risk before you pay, not after.

A Receipt Is Not a Settled Loan.

Sellers will often wave a payment receipt or say the loan is “almost settled”. On hire purchase and conditional sale agreements, the car normally stays the lender's property until the final balance is paid. A promise, a part-payment receipt or a V5C in the seller's name does not change that.

Get written confirmation from the lender that the finance is fully settled before you pay. If it's a company sale, confirm the company is trading and has the right to sell.

  • Check for recorded finance against the registration and match the VIN to the paperwork.
  • Ask for a settlement letter from the lender — not a screenshot, receipt or verbal promise.
  • If the seller rushes you, refuses checks or wants cash today, keep your money and walk away.
